Horizon Air

Horizon Air, operating under IATA code QX and ICAO code QXE, is a regional airline based in the United States and a wholly owned subsidiary of Alaska Air Group. Founded in 1981 by Milt Kuolt, the airline began operations as an independent carrier providing essential air service to communities across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Its headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington, and it has long served as a critical feeder for its parent company, Alaska Airlines. The airline is known for its consistent focus on operational reliability and customer service, and it operates under the branding and network strategy of the larger Alaska Airlines system.

Horizon Air’s ownership history is closely tied to its strategic role within Alaska Air Group. Originally launched as a standalone entity, the airline was acquired by Alaska Air Group in 1986, a move that solidified the regional–mainline partnership that exists today. This acquisition allowed Horizon Air to access the resources and network of a major carrier while maintaining its own identity as a specialist in turboprop operations. Over the decades, the airline has navigated industry consolidation, economic shifts, and fleet modernisations, all while remaining a cornerstone of Alaska Airlines’ feed network. The company is publicly traded only through its parent, and its operations are integrated into Alaska’s broader route planning, scheduling, and loyalty programmes.

The airline’s fleet composition has evolved significantly since its inception, reflecting its adaptation to changing market demands and technological advancements. As of the current period, Horizon Air operates a fleet of Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft, a type known for its efficiency on short- to medium-haul sectors and its ability to serve airports with shorter runways. These aircraft are configured to accommodate approximately 76 passengers in a single-class arrangement. In earlier decades, the airline flew types including the Fokker F28 Fellowship, the Dornier 328, and the Dash 8-100/200 series. The transition to an all-Q400 fleet was completed in the 2010s, but recent industry trends have prompted Alaska Air Group to announce a gradual shift toward an all-jet fleet, with Horizon Air expected to phase out its turboprops in favour of larger regional jets operated by partner carriers such as SkyWest. The primary hub for Horizon Air is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, while Portland International Airport serves as a key focus city, supporting the airline’s extensive network in the northwestern United States and parts of western Canada.

Horizon Air’s operational model is that of a full-service regional carrier, focusing on providing reliable connections for passengers flying on Alaska Airlines. It does not operate as a low-cost or ultra-low-cost airline; rather, it offers a full complement of services, including advance seat assignments, inflight beverage service, and checked baggage allowances aligned with Alaska’s policies. The airline is not a member of any global airline alliance—Alaska Air Group itself is not part of Star Alliance, oneworld, or SkyTeam—but it maintains extensive codeshare and loyalty partnerships through Alaska’s Mileage Plan programme. Over its history, Horizon Air has earned notable recognition, including multiple awards for on-time performance and operational excellence from industry organisations such as FlightStats and OAG. In addition, the airline was one of the early adopters of the Bombardier Q400 in North America, helping to prove the viability of modern turboprop technology in regional markets.
