MNG Airlines, headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, stands as a prominent all-cargo carrier serving global trade lanes from its Turkish bases. Founded in 1996 by Mehmet N. Gündeş, whose initials form the airline’s name, the carrier initially operated both passenger and cargo charter flights. However, by the early 2000s, MNG shifted its entire focus to dedicated air freight, a strategic move that allowed it to build a reputation for reliability in the express and general cargo sectors. The airline remains under the ownership of the Gündeş family through the MNG Group, a diversified Turkish conglomerate with interests in logistics, tourism, and aviation services.

MNG Airlines’ fleet is composed exclusively of medium-to-large widebody freighters, reflecting its operational emphasis on high-volume, long-haul cargo. The backbone of the fleet consists of Airbus A330-200F and A300-600F aircraft, supplemented by newer A330-300P2F (passenger-to-freighter) conversions. These aircraft are well-suited for carrying palletised cargo and perishable goods, and several units are equipped with advanced cargo handling systems to facilitate rapid ground turnaround. The airline has also retired older A300B4 and A310 freighters over the years, modernising its lineup to meet evolving noise and emissions standards. As of 2025, MNG operates a fleet of around a dozen freighters, with plans to add more A330-300P2F units as part of its fleet renewal strategy.

The airline’s primary operational hubs are Istanbul Atatürk Airport (now dedicated to cargo operations after the closure of scheduled passenger services) and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, both strategically located on the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus, respectively. These dual bases provide flexibility for cargo handling and allow MNG to serve a wide range of origin-destination pairs without overlapping route structures. In addition, Ankara Esenboğa Airport functions as a secondary hub, supporting charter flights and domestic feeder services. By maintaining multiple home airports, MNG can optimise aircraft utilisation and offer quick turnaround times, which is a critical advantage in the express cargo market. The airline does not belong to any global airline alliance, as its pure cargo model does not align with the passenger-focused partnerships typical of such groups.

MNG Airlines operates under a hybrid scheduled and charter cargo model, handling everything from general merchandise to pharmaceutical products and oversized machinery. It has earned several notable milestones since its founding. In 2011, MNG became the first Turkish cargo carrier to launch scheduled transatlantic all-cargo flights, initially connecting Turkey to North America. The airline later expanded its network to include key markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MNG played a vital role in transporting medical supplies and personal protective equipment across continents, demonstrating operational agility. The carrier has also achieved IATA’s CEIV Pharma certification, underscoring its ability to handle time- and temperature-sensitive healthcare shipments with the highest standards. With a history of steady growth and a clear focus on cargo, MNG Airlines continues to strengthen its position as a leading Turkish freight provider in the global logistics chain.
