Varig Log, operating under the IATA code LC and ICAO code VLO, is a Brazilian cargo airline with a history deeply intertwined with the rise and restructuring of the country’s aviation industry. Founded in 2000 as the dedicated freight division of Varig—the long‑standing flag carrier of Brazil—it was originally created to manage the parent company’s growing cargo operations separately from its passenger services. Following Varig’s financial difficulties and eventual bankruptcy in the mid‑2000s, Varig Log was divested and acquired by a distinct investor group. In subsequent years, the airline was bought by the Varig Logística group, which continues to operate it as an independent all‑cargo carrier. This ownership structure has allowed the airline to maintain a distinct identity and to focus exclusively on Brazil’s domestic and regional freight market, without the legacy liabilities of the former passenger operator.

The airline’s fleet is composed entirely of freighter aircraft optimised for medium‑haul cargo operations. Its current lineup includes the Boeing 737‑300F, a workhorse of regional airfreight, and the more modern Boeing 737‑800BCF, which offers higher payload capacity and improved fuel efficiency. Varig Log also operates a small number of Boeing 727‑200F aircraft, although these are gradually being phased out as newer types are introduced. The fleet is configured for high‑density cargo, with the ability to carry palletised and containerised loads. All aircraft are owned or leased by the airline and are maintained to international standards. Varig Log does not operate passenger‑to‑freighter conversions on behalf of third parties; its entire fleet is dedicated to its own scheduled and charter cargo services.

The airline’s primary operational base is São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport, the busiest airport in Brazil and a critical node for South American logistics. Guarulhos serves as Varig Log’s main hub, where most of its sorting, transit, and ground handling activities are concentrated. Additionally, the airline maintains a secondary hub at Viracopos International Airport in Campinas, another major cargo‑friendly facility that offers extensive warehousing and customs infrastructure. These two airports together handle the vast majority of Varig Log’s flights, allowing the carrier to connect the industrial heartland of São Paulo state to the rest of the country. The airline does not operate from any other domestic hubs of comparable scale, though it does maintain smaller station facilities at other airports to support its network.

Varig Log operates under a pure cargo business model, functioning as a scheduled and charter freight carrier. It is not a low‑cost, regional, or flag carrier; rather, it is a dedicated cargo airline serving the logistics needs of shippers, freight forwarders, and e‑commerce providers. It is not a member of any global airline alliance, such as Star Alliance or SkyTeam, as cargo carriers typically do not join passenger‑focused groupings. The airline has achieved several notable milestones over its existence. It was one of the first Brazilian cargo carriers to implement an online booking and tracking platform, improving operational transparency for customers. Varig Log also played a key role in maintaining Brazil’s domestic airfreight capacity during the turbulent period of Varig’s restructuring. In 2022, the airline was recognised for its operational reliability and on‑time performance, receiving an industry award for excellence in cargo handling. Today, Varig Log continues to be a significant player in Brazil’s air cargo sector, known for its focused fleet, its strong presence at Guarulhos and Viracopos, and its steady growth in a competitive market.
