Africa West

Africa West, designated by IATA code FK and ICAO code WTA, was a privately owned Togolese airline that operated scheduled passenger and charter services within West Africa. Founded in 2005 by Togolese aviation entrepreneur Gervais Koffi Djondo, the carrier was established to bridge regional connectivity and provide an alternative to state-run or foreign airlines operating in the area. The airline was headquartered in Lomé, the capital of Togo, and its operational base was the Lomé–Tokoin International Airport, now officially named Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport. This airport served as the primary hub, from which Africa West coordinated its flight operations and maintenance activities. The airline was an independent entity, not affiliated with any major global airline group, and its ownership remained private throughout its operational history, reflecting a common model for smaller African carriers seeking to serve niche markets.

In terms of fleet composition, Africa West maintained a relatively modest selection of aircraft tailored for short- to medium-haul routes typical of the West African region. The core of its fleet consisted of McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series aircraft, particularly the MD-83 variant, known for their reliability and capacity to operate from airports with shorter runways. At its peak, the airline operated two or three MD-83s, which provided seating for around 140 passengers in an all-economy configuration. Additionally, the carrier briefly operated at least one Boeing 727-200 cargo aircraft for dedicated freight charters, though passenger operations remained the primary focus. The fleet was managed with a lean approach, rotating aircraft based on demand and seasonal fluctuations. Africa West did not operate wide-body or long-haul aircraft, confining its scope to regional connectivity within West and Central Africa. The airline’s operational model was a hybrid of low-cost efficiency and full-service elements, offering a single class of service with complimentary snacks and beverages on most flights, while bypassing complex loyalty programmes or interline agreements.

Africa West functioned as a regional scheduled and charter carrier, distinct from flag carriers or major low-cost operators. Its business model relied heavily on point-to-point services linking secondary cities and capitals, often filling gaps left by larger airlines. The airline was never part of any global airline alliance such as Star Alliance, oneworld, or SkyTeam, nor did it maintain extensive codeshare arrangements. Instead, it focused on direct sales and local partnerships. A notable milestone in its history was becoming one of the first privately owned airlines based in Togo to offer scheduled services, helping to increase the country’s visibility in the regional aviation market. However, after several years of operation, Africa West faced financial difficulties exacerbated by high fuel costs, intense competition, and the global economic downturn. By 2012, the airline suspended scheduled operations and eventually ceased all flying, with its aircraft either returned to lessors or placed into storage. Despite its relatively brief existence, Africa West left a mark as an example of entrepreneurial aviation in a small West African nation, demonstrating both the potential and the challenges of running a private carrier in a region dominated by state-backed rivals. Its legacy remains a reference point for subsequent Togolese aviation ventures, though no awards or major industry recognitions were associated with the airline.
